  • Twitter Weekly Updates for 2010-08-21

    • FINALLY found a source with a verifiable registry number for the U.S.S. Sovereign… Featured prominently in the game Bridge Commander #
    • The numbers in the Decipher RPG Starships reference were just way too high – expected somewhere around 75000, but they gave in the 90000s #
    • Bridge Commander gave a very clear NCC-73811, though, and that's far closer, given the time frame that the ship was built #
    • Interestingly, that means the Sovereign was built about a year before the Defiant… I was expecting the other way around #
    • While searching, I also found Stardates for several games, and updated my timeline spreadsheet accordingly #
    • It happens to all of us, @theisb. Some of us more frequently than others. #
    • Oh sweet irony RT @latimes Conservative group kicks off $4.1-million election ad campaign decrying wasteful spending http://lat.ms/bOM4xG #

    • @danmcguff I love that his only regret was Garfield in reply to danmcguff #
    • Watching some no-budget indie zombie flick on Netflix… it is, shall we say, rather weird, esp. the part with the cannibal couple #
    • ok… apparently they're not cannibals, they're vampires, and they're keeping this woman alive since most of their food source is zombified #
    • and now it's getting even weirder lol #
    • OK…. Sadistic guy's in a priest's vestments, and the only stuff in his house is a handgun, a cross, and "Catholicism for Dummies." LOL #
    • Have I mentioned this movie is a few steps beyond weird? #
    • Oh, man, this movie is screaming for a good MST3K treatment #
    • I have to admit, I'd never considered the impact of a zombie apocalypse on the vampire community before seeing this film #
    • I can understand why it only got 1.5 stars on Netflix, but it really wasn't that bad. The editing and music were actually quite good. #
    • The dialogue was occasionally witty, and I don't think I've ever seen someone do vampires in a zombie movie before. #
    • Heck, there was even an appearance by a pre-pubescent Antichrist. This movie had it all. #
    • Even better, this movie's vampires were daywalkers who didn't sparkle in sunlight. #
    • Trekipedia: Update: 16 August 2010 http://www.trekipedia.net/7013 #
    • Vets' Orientation tomorrow morning at Cal State Fullerton. GI Bill paperwork (finally) finished and sorted out. Classes start next week. #
    • Watching the original V on Netflix… apparently the first thing all burglars do after breaking into a house is turn on the TV #
    • And holy crap, 80s, those jeans all the guys are wearing look uncomfortably tight #originalv #
    • Maybe it's just me, but there had to have been a better way to show what was going on than watching people watching TV #originalv #
    • Watching the #originalV is like how @theisb's @chrisvstwilight describes Twilight – everything exciting is relayed to us third-hand #
    • Hate to say it, #originalV but I'm 15 minutes in and have to say that the remake did it better. #
    • You can tell this is fiction 'cause the leader of the V's just called humans "intelligent life." #originalV #
    • Gee, high school band playing the Star Wars theme song as the alien ship lands… foreshadowing much? #originalV #
    • I wonder how much money Lucas got out of the licensing deal for that #originalV #
    • Oh, classic 80s freeze-frame for a few seconds before the credits roll lol #originalV #
    • My Twifficiency score is 53%. Whats yours? http://twifficiency.com/ #
    • 53%… of what? It gives no basis or reference for the scores. For all I know, it's just a random number #

    • Oh man, Jack Black was in a third-season episode of X-Files? And his best friend, Giovanni Ribisi, was a killer with electrical powers? #

    • Once again, X-Files shows that its writers didn't like the military; group of US soldiers just lined ppl up & shot them into mass grave >:( #
    • On the third season, and I can't recall a single ep so far that put the military in a good light. Always showed them as thugs/pawns #
    • It's been a while since I last watched X-Files, but I don't remember the anti-military bias standing out so much before. #
    • Hey, this is tweet #3456 For once, I didn't miss a milestone. #
    • @A_Peabody It's not just the commanders. Even the rank-and-file are portrayed negatively. Really ruining the entertainment for me. in reply to A_Peabody #
    • @A_Peabody Just frustrating that some people think that's what the military is really like. At least it's gotten better over the years in reply to A_Peabody #

    • OK, the second the woman accused of treason left the country, she became the CIA's problem. FBI has no jurisdiction outside the USA. #
    • You'd think that a series about a pair of FBI agents would at least know how the FBI operates. #

    • @DamonS23 @ArcticMandy I know about the Mounties, and thanks to Ren & Stimpy, the Royal Canadian Kilted Yaksmen, too. :p #
    • It kills me when TV shows get the military wrong. Like a guy at a funeral practically doing gymnastics to salute the jets flying overhead #
    • The little things really bug me, too, like epaulets not being folded under the collar, or wearing hats indoors without getting chewed out #
    • Stargate was pretty bad about that stuff at first, but it got better after they got an advisor from the Air Force. #
    • Watching season 1 of X-Files and it's like nails on a chalkboard to me every time they show a military character on screen #
    • OK, so the guy wasn't taking his hat off inside… but now he's outside in uniform and NOT wearing it… oy vey…. lol #
    • Wow. Secret military operation in rural Wisconsin, and the first thing they set up was a brig? Talk about priorities. #
    • Somehow I get the feeling that whoever wrote this episode didn't really think highly of the military. They're all being portrayed as thugs. #
    • Wow. Junk science on top of badly caricatured characterization. This one's just hitting all my buttons. #
    • I should probably skip to the next ep before it rubs me the wrong way, but it's like a train wreck: I just can't turn away. #
    • Note to TV writers: there's a lot of laws governing what the military can do on U.S. soil. Knowing about them before writing might help. #
    • Maybe it's just me, but if I worked with Mulder and he was always right, I'd stop doubting him. Was there EVER an ep where he was wrong? #
    • He always jumped to the most insane lengths to explain a case, Scully would pooh-pooh the idea, and lo and behold, he was right all along. #
    • I'd love to see one where Scully was right, and Mulder would have to accept that there was a mundane explanation for a case. #

    • But I digress. Where was I? Oh, right. Janeway's sporting Locutus' old duds, 'cept her laser was blue instead of red for some reason #
    • Oh, Tuvok just revealed he was born on the Vulcanis Lunar Colony. It's possible his parents survived Vulcan's destruction in the new movie #
    • Of course, butterfly effect could mean he never gets conceived… it apparently made Chekov 4 years older, at any rate #
    • Anyway, why is Janeway's laser blue? We've never seen a Borg laser any color except red before, and everything else is green… so why blue? #
    • Wait… they send three of the ship's senior officers to be intentionally assimilated and DON'T change their command codes? #
    • Those codes should've been locked out before they even left the ship #
    • Their own fault they just took a torpedo through the saucer. #

    • Stardate order #startrek cont'd: DS9 pauses to Mourn for Morn, while Voyager's crew gets nightmares from nearby aliens… #
    • Technobabble got really bad in season 4 of Voyager… everything became "iso-this" and "iso-that." Isometric, Isokinetic, Isolinear, Isotons #
    • It's like the writers suddenly discovered prefixes and used something that sounded vaguely metric without actually being a real prefix #
    • Meanwhile, over at the DS9 offices, they were eschewing most of the technobabble, focusing instead on the characters, which I greatly prefer #
    • Not to say I didn't enjoy Voyager; quite the opposite. It just seems like a distant second in the quality of the writing. #

  • Twitter Weekly Updates for 2010-07-24

    • Just watched "These Are the Voyages" immediately after "The Pegasus," which only reinforced how much the ENT finale sucked #
    • I can forgive Frakes & Sirtis not looking the same, since it was filmed 10 yrs later… but the story didn't fit the original episode at all #
    • Bad enough the series finale of Enterprise was told as a TNG Holodeck flashback story more about Riker than Archer… #
    • …but even shoehorning it into "The Pegasus" didn't really work, either, because it was so far off from that episode's themes & story logic #
    • Seriously, how does Riker on the holodeck watching Trip blow himself up like a moron help him decide on how to handle Pressman & Picard? #
    • And why rehash an episode of a series canceled 10 years earlier as the finale for a series set 215 years before that ep took place? #
    • At least by doing it that way, the events of the episode set in the ENT era could be completely ignored as an inaccurate historical drama #
    • Although the retcon alluding to Pressman testing the phase cloak for Section 31 was a nice touch. I suspected as much myself, anyhow #
    • Actually, would that qualify as a retcon? Original never mentioned 31, but 31 didn't show up until several yrs later on DS9. Meh. Semantics. #
    • Either way, the comment about the "secret branch of Starfleet Intelligence" was a nice touch. So the episode wasn't a complete waste #
    • @DantesSTO I started with Archer; I'm watching in the story order, so the TNG-era stuff is all mixed together in reply to DantesSTO #

    • And thus is spawned the ST07 timeline, where Soran detonated the Veridian star, killing everyone on Veridian IV and the Ent-D crew as well #

    • Now I'm on the "Chain of Command" 2-parter. Man, Nechayev was a bitch from her first five seconds on screen. No wonder I never liked her #
    • I think the crew acted pretty unprofessionally, too… Jellico had a very different command style and they acted like spoiled brats #
    • They didn't like the changes Jellico was making, so all of them but Data bitched and moaned. No wonder Jellico relieved Riker of duty. #
    • One bright note, at least Troi started wearing a uniform like every other officer on the ship after Jellico's stint as captain. #
